YWPA Leadership Magnet

Schedule a tour to visit the YWPA. Tours will take place weekly on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m.
Step One:
Complete an application on-line through Miami-Dade County Public Schools at Miami Magnet Schools by selecting Register. Applications are available beginning October 1 of the current school year. The deadline for submission is January 15 of the current school year.
 
Step Two:
You will receive your acceptance letter in March of the current school year. You must confirm your acceptance to the school by signing and returning your acceptance letter within two (2) weeks of receipt of the letter.
 
Step Three:
Attend the New Student / Parent orientation. Complete and submit the Enrollment Agreement and click here for information regarding uniforms.

Magnet Eligibility Requirements

General Information

  • All schools must post their eligibility requirements and a link to the online Magnet application on the school’s website.
  • Any criterion that exceeds the Basic Criteria posted below must be submitted and approved in writing by the School Choice & Parental Options office prior to being posted on the school’s website and used for determining eligibility of applicants.
  • By Board Policy, no single criteria can exclude a student from eligibility with the exception of failure to complete/submit required forms, transcripts, or attend auditions.
  • It is the parents’ responsibility to contact the school for requirements that are school specific (e.g. student records, proficiency tests, auditions, etc.).
  • Schools retain the right to declare a student ineligible if required documentation is not submitted by January 15th.
  • Schools with Visual and Performing Arts programs must submit to the School Choice & Parental Options office a record of audition/interview results by March 1st each year.
  • BEGINNING THIS YEAR, NO RECOMMENDATION FORMS WILL BE REQUIRED.

A. Basic Criteria for Random Selection Magnets (Grades 6-8)

  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be a “2” or higher for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.
  • FSA scores can only be reviewed as part of the eligibility process under very limited circumstances.
  • Elementary schools may not review FSA scores.
  • Secondary schools with a 7 or an 8 period schedule may not review FSA scores.
  • Secondary schools with a six period schedule may review FSA scores to determine if a student has at least one elective period available to take magnet theme courses.
  • FSA scores can only be reviewed as part of the eligibility process under very limited circumstances.
  • Elementary schools may not review FSA scores.
  • Secondary schools with a 7 or an 8 period schedule may not review FSA scores.
  • Secondary schools with a 6 period schedule may review FSA scores to determine if a student has at least one elective period available to take magnet theme courses.

B. IB/IS/Cambridge/Capstone/MAST/iPREP/iTech @ Miami Springs/Terra Requirements (Senior High Only–grades 9-12)

  • A minimum of 2.5 Grade Point Average in each core academic subject area (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • A minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in conduct for the core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts, mathematics, science, social studies) for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be a “2” or higher for the previous year and the first grading period of the current year combined.
  • No more than 10 unexcused absences for the previous year and 5 unexcused absences for the first semester of the current year.
  • May require that Physical Science Honors and Algebra I Honors be completed and received credit before the school year begins.
